This is so because the expertise of the experts has a common origin and ‘ reason for existence; namely the communication explosion of this century in the multilingual continent of Europe. The rapid expansion of communication needs and means among people with different mother tongues resulted there in great pressure upon language teaching, especially in the smaller countries which depend upon international commerce conducted in foreign languages. However, foreign languages have also gained an intimate place in the everyday lives of present-day Europeans. How much so can be illustrated by such facts as that each summer there are more foreigners in Switzerland than Swiss, and that each year more than one third of the population of Holland takes a holiday abroad.
