In the early exciting days of planning the founding and development of the Regional English Language Centre, far-sighted planners decided that there should be training programmes for teacher-educators in the teaching of English as a second or foreign language, the conducting and promoting of research and the production of instructional materials. They fully realized that these programmes and activities would be enhanced with the support of library resources and the existence of an information centre to disseminate information and the results of research on English language teaching. As a consequence, the collection of all kinds of materials from a variety of sources became a prime necessity; the efficient organization of these materials for the use and disposal of those concerned with English teaching and the diffusion of knowledge in the language arts became equally important considertions. In this article, the RELC Librarian and Head of Information Centre, in the light of her experience in establishing and working with library resources for language teaching and research, offers suggestions to those in the region who would like to build up similar resources.
