At the 1972 RELC Seminar, members of the Workshop on the development of reading laboratory materials agreed that one of their difficulties lay in deciding what lexical items should be emphasized in a &dquo;reading box&dquo;. None of the best-known standard word-lists was compiled for Southeast Asia, and little research on our students’ lexical difficulties has been done, vocabulary being a rather neglected field of TEFL / TESL.
