Isi artikel
Reviews the literature of the aims and objectives of academic libraries and the ways in which they have adapted to change over the years. Examines a case study, based on the experiences of the University of the West of England Library, Bristol (UWE), which examines the degree to which a ’new model’ approach can help an academic library secure growth. Describes the’new model’ approach, based on a number of UWE’s interrelated policies and involves: a managerial approach that is enforced by professional management practices involving genuine staff participation; purposeful staffing and staff development policies that work in support of the library’s aims and objectives; sufficiently generous funding to permit the support of innovation ; a commitment to collection development policies that integrate information technology based sources; an active library role in the development of the University’s teaching and learning strategies; and a commitment to marketing the library and its services.
