The way the past perfect has been taught in many English courses has tended to be misleading and to cause some foreign learners to overuse it. The past perfect or pluperfect &dquo;tense&dquo; consists of the word had plus a past participle. It can represent the shifting back of the simple past tense (sentence 1) or the present perfect tense (sentence 2).
