Isi artikel
Presents results of a research project, carried out at Liverpool Polytechnic Library Services (now the John Moores University) in Summer 1991, to analyze the current CD-ROM facilities and to evaluate the CD-ROM networking systems currently on the market that were best matched to the polytechnic’s needs. The University has a multi-site city centre campus with 13 sites, each of which is joined to the campus Ethernet by fibre optics. The project aimed to find a CD-ROM local area network (LAN) solution that could be bridged into the campus Ethernet without causing severe degradation of the overall system. The soft systems analysis approach involved looking at the effects of the current situation on users, in terms of antagonism between different types of users, antagonism between library staff and management, and the general increase in pressure on staff dealing with the running of the current CDROM system. Concludes with a system specification for the recommended CD-ROM network.
