Isi artikel
This article considers the main motives for introducing entrepreneurial and other income-generating activities into academic libraries and offers useful advice to librarians who wish to engage in such projects, covering: compatibility of the entrepreneurial project with the library’s objectives; management of the projects so as not to undermine the library’s mainstream tasks; the need for institutional support at the highest level; and the acceptance of the risks that are always present. The article looks at the kinds of projects and enterprises that might be undertaken by a library and how they may be approached so as to maximize benefits and minimize effort. They range from small-scale activities, such as charging for photocopies and other services and sale of stationery and plastic bags through to large-scale items such as large funded research projects.
