This has been a decade of development for dictionaries of English, culminating in the publication of the Oxford English dictionary 2nd edition. Lexicography itself has emerged as a distinct profession. The dominance of the Concise Oxford dictionary in the single-volume dictionary market has been strongly challenged. The monolingual learners’ dictionary has made great strides, drawing on recent linguistic research. After a slow start, computerization is now widespread. The OED 2nd edition is not a full revision but an integration of the 1st edition and the Supplement, with some updating. It is now in database form and an interim CDROM has been published. Enhancements are planned.
