This paper is a report of an experiment called the Unified Language Project (henceforth ULP), which was conducted in four primary schools in Malaysia. The ULP was one of the studies into ways and means of improving the teaching of English as a second language in a situation where English was being progressively phased out as a medium of instruction. The aim was to experiment with some radical departures from normal language teaching procedures in the hope that a solution could be found to the problem of maintaining the standard of English during the progressive Malayanisation of the medium of instruction in other subjects.
