Traditionally one of the basic functions of public libraries has been to facilitate learning. The question is how this function could be or ought to be interpreted. In this essay the concept of the open learning centre is used to probe the library’s proper role in fostering the motivation for learning and in supporting learning efforts. The fruitfulness of the concept will be demonstrated and its implications explored
