Isi artikel
Many nineteenth-century public libraries organized regular classes for adult groups, particularly in technical subjects. Various pieces of legislation recognized and to some extent facilitated this link. The feeling that the provision of classes strengthened and even legitimized the public library was frequently at odds with the reality of the problems which resulted. Attitudes towards this provision for adult education reveal serious problems in defining the role of the public library in society.
