The writer describes the rural information service operating in Leicestershire, puts it in a national context, and suggests some solutions to alleviate rural information deprivation. Village information files were initiated by Leicestershire Rural Community Council with Development Commission funding and continued by Leicestershire Libraries. The article describes the implementation of the service in one area of Leicestershire and looks to the future monitoring, adaptation and continuation of the service. Although primarily about Leicestershire, the article directs attention to a wide variety of other initiatives operating in various parts of the UK.
