Abstract
As a solution to the problem of delivering medical care to rural communities, the government of Iran drafted medical and paramedical personnel into a Health Corps rather than into military service. After 6 months training in public health and rural medicine, draftees spent 18 months in the villages. Members of the corps were assigned to stationary units or to mobile units consisting of a doctor with two high-school graduates serving as assistants, and a vehicle for transportation. Each mobile unit visited two villages a day, and each village once a week. In 4 years over 13 million patients were seen by a doctor. With the health corps functioning at the village level, hospitals in nearby towns have to provide more advanced services and continue to be the link with the university medical centre.
