Abstract
This chapter deals with six papers presented on integrated approach in health care delivery. The first paper calls for an important consideration to be given to food and nutrition in national health planning. The second paper discusses the inadequacy of medicare in Nigeria; the role of the doctor in the formulation of policy in medicare; the training of medical personnel; the need for medical auxiliaries; and the special role of teaching hospitals and medical schools. It then calls for an integrated development of the country's educational, socioeconomic, and agricultural potentials towards adequate medical care delivery. Paper three deals with the role of the pharmacist in the health team, as an expert on medicinal products in an advisory capacity to both the doctor and the patient. It then emphasizes the importance of giving mutual respect to the functions of each team member. The fourth paper examines problems facing health care administration in Nigeria and calls for research into specific areas to facilitate policy decisions. Paper five asks for more government financial support to enable existing facilities in medical schools, state hospitals, and health centres to be used to train more doctors and other health personnel. The final paper emphasizes the important role of the general practitioner in reducing the cost of medical service as compared to government-sponsored service: his training is simpler and he has extensive experience in dealing with all minor human and health problems in rural areas. An increase in the number of general practitioners would reduce the urgency of the need for medical auxiliaries. The main points of discussion were: (I)control of health centres; (2)increasing doctors' responsibility to extend to rural areas; (3)expanding existing teaching hospitals; (4)providing basic school amenities in the rural areas to enable doctors to work there; and (5)the need for all health personnel to present a unified front in solving the country's health problems.
