Abstract
Medical services in developing countries fail because they emphasize hospital services and professional training. The greatest needs are for readily accessible maternal and child health care and sanitation services. The goal for Botswana should be the provision of trained health personnel to meet these needs, so that within 10 years 90 of the population would have access to basic health services without having to travel more than 2 miles. Once trained, staff would be expected to work on a voluntary basis. Short courses for village sanitarians, mothers' aides, medical auxiliaries, and rural specialists are outlined.
