Abstract
Most Africans live at the subsistence level and have little education. Since most health services are curative and exist in urban areas there is an urgent need for the training of local health personnel. The number of medical and paramedical personnel in Africa as of 1960 and projections of personnel requirements for 1960-70 are given. It is suggested that health education be incorporated into the curriculum of school programmes as an alternative to specialized premedical and health/ technical training. Since no single African language predominates enough to be used in medical schools, English and French remain the languages of instruction. Other problems in nurse and sanitary staff training are discussed. Training for all categories of health personnel should stress public health. The training of professional staff in methods of utilizing auxiliaries is essential.
