Isi artikel
For historical reasons the rare-book librarian is often seen as passive custodian of his books. and an associatron is seen between rare-book librarianship and historical bibliography. Yet the use of rare books is not confined to bibliographers. Other users require intellectual access to rare-book collections of the same kind as that provided to all other library materials. It is suggested that modern classification systems can be applied in the compilation of subject catalogues of older printed material. The compilation of union catalogues, essential for rare-books work, can also break away from the constraints of bibliography. Conventional modern cataloguing is adequate for most users of rare books, and, combined with proper subject access, will increase the utility of rare-book collections.
