Isi artikel
It is generally assumed that the medium of instruction in Anglo-Chinese secondary schools in Hong Kong is English. However, it seems that this generalization is not strictly accurate. The amount of English used in a particular classroom apparently depends on the practice of the school, the particular subject matter, the intention of the teacher, and the competency of the students or the teacher in using English. Unfortunately, no information has been available to indicate the amount of English used in the classroom. Neither has there been any information on what language mode students prefer their teachers to use. Since both types of information seem absolutely necessary in helping to make decisions pertaining to language issues in Hong Kong, this present study was designed with two objectives in mind. First, it sought to find out the amount of English used in teaching in the junior forms of Anglo-Chinese secondary schools in Hong Kong. Second, it also aimed at finding out the amount of English students preferred their teachers to use, and to assess how the students rated their own confidence in using English and Chinese.
