The structure of any organization is determined by its response to environmental pressures and by a systems analysis of the organization itself. Polytechnic libraries face change in relation both to their evolving internal systems and to the discordant dynamic environment in which they exist. However, changes in library service can only be accommodated within certain parameters as controlled by the internal sub-systems of the library. This study considers the Contingency Theory and its possible application to polytechnic libraries.
