Guides to reference material should be authoritative when national and at least representative when attempting to be international, although there will always be the language barrier. Some of the merits and drawbacks of selected reference guides—Malclès, Beaudiquez and Zundel-Benkhemis, Totok, Maichel, Winchell/Sheehy, ARBA, Ryder, two Japanese guides, Musiker, Geoghegan, Sabor and Borchardt, with others, are discussed.
