Eighteen English social services departments were visited by Project INISS staff as part of their study of information needs and services. A number of categories of staff with key information roles are identified and a variety of specific information services noted. Some problems in providing services are reported and suggestions for improvements through cooperation are made. The remainder of the research programme is outlined.
