The geography, economy, culture, and history of Nigeria are outlined to provide a background to the understanding of its current medical problems. Vital statistics on population distribution, disease patterns, and health conditions are presented in tabular form to illustrate the plight of millions of people deprived of an adewuate standard of locing, proper diet, and medical care. Principal diseases, traditional and modern medical practice, health facilities are described; the present status and projected future of medicla and paramedical education are discussed. The need for increased emphasis on preventive medicine has been recognized, as has the fact that only through education will per progress be realized. |
