Isi artikelThis article attempts to mark the boundaries and the context in which the current research on therapy outcome takes place. It delineates in greater depth the limitations imposed by the positivistic paradigm on the research, and it brings critical theory to bear on the interpretation of the findings. It concludes that the current research is too narrow to present the field of psychotherapy adequately. The positivistic paradigm serves as a metatheory that conceals issues of privilege and power because it leaves the underlying values and assumptions unaddressed. This article’s intent is to remind psychologists of their responsibility to be critical consumers of research and to acknowledge controversial issues regardless of whether their economic interests are served or not.
