This is an account of a short course which we ran for a group of ESP teachers in Indonesia in March 1981.1 We are presenting it for a wider public because we feel that many of the problems the course tried to tackle are widespread, especially in countries with a similar English-teaching background to Indonesia’s. Hopefully, some of the solutions which we hit upon both in the planning stage and during the running of the course will have an equally wide applicability and usefulness.
