Isi artikelThe relatively long history of the study of phonetics has produced a variety of transcription systems which can cause some bewilderment to a student undertaking further reading in the field. From an intellectual viewpoint, there is of course no harm in the existence of competing systemsindeed, it would appear to be a healthy and necessary part of the growth of phonetics as a science. It means, however, that anyone who cares to proceed beyond the most elementary stage of phonetics must acquire literacy in more than one phonetic alphabet. Teachers of phonetics are, in general, fully aware of the multiplicity of transcription systems and it is not at all uncommon for a teacher to introduce students to alternative phonetic alphabets. At the same time, it is not uncommon for teachers (and textbooks) to trivialize the problem of alternative alphabets. It is my purpose here to argue that, far from being a peripheral and relatively uninteresting aspect of such courses, a discussion of such matters, even in an elementary phonetics course, can be both informative and intellectually stimulating. I will elaborate my view by discussing ways of transcribing the low back vowels of Received Pronunciation (RP).
