Isi artikel
With the recent growth of research in second language learning has grown the need to specify the target language proficiency of our subjects in objective, quantitative and verifiable terms. Researchers do usually report the L2 proficiency but in rather subjective terms: they identify learners as ’beginning,’ ’intermediate,’ or ’advanced.’ Such a classification is rather vague and not very helpful. We are frequently faced with controversies about the influence of a certain factor in the language learning process. We tend to overlook the probability that the influence of the factor might fluctuate depending upon the learner’s proficiency level. It is, therefore, absolutely necessary to be able to specify the leamer’s proficiency level as objectively as possible. This has naturally led to the quest for suitable proficiency measures. Incidentally, MLU (mean length of utterance) employed by first language acquisition researchers cannot be applied in adult second language learning research where the learner is cognitively mature.
