This paper reports the results of a study in which both discrete-point and integrative tests were utilized to assess the attained second language proficiency of a group of adults who participated in a four-week language immersion program. The purpose of the study was to examine the performance of discrete-point and integrative tests from a sizeable group of subjects who had the same native language. The questions addressed include the following: (1) Which tests produce the highest correlations between parallel forms, i.e. which tests exhibit greater concurrent validity from the subject pool under consideration? (2) Do integrative and discrete-point tests share common variance, i.e. will there be one or more relationships underlying the data? (3) Will integrative and discrete-point tests discriminate between different proficiency levels equally well?
