Abstract
A committee investigation in 1970 revealed that major dissatisfaction with medical services in Israel arises from the following: the lack of a single national authority to plan and execute health policies; fragmentation of existing health services; lack of integration between various branches of medicine; specialists' isolation from corresponding hospital departments; family physicians' separation from the hospital; lack of paramedical staff; and concentration of undergraduate medical education in the large hospitals, isolated from family clinics. All patients should be referred to the family physician who is assisted by a health team and associated with a regional hospital. Regional health authorities should be established under a single national health authority. Further committee recommendations focus on the role of the family physician.
