Abstract
A WHO team was engaged in the following aspects of a public health programme in Andhra Pradesh, India: the development of rural training areas for doctors, nurses, and auxiliary personnel; the development of rural training and orientation programmes for doctors, nurses, and auxiliaries; the organization and conduct of courses in rural health work for doctors, nurses, and auxiliary personnel; and the study of primary health centres. Practice fields were established at four health centres. Existing orientation courses were stimulated with seminars, group discussions and simulation experiments. Problems confronting the primary health centres were the shortage of trained personnel in the face of a wide range of diseases requiring specialist attention, and the lack of interest shown by many young medical officers. Four demonstration districts that were functioning lacked sufficient administrative integration with public health centres. Recommendations have been offered for improving the status of rural training areas, continuing evaluation of the orientation courses, reorganization of the administration of rural medical facilities, conducting village surveys, and transferring greater administrative authority to officers in charge of the demonstration districts.
