Abstract
This paper records a speech delivered by the Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Kwara State, to the Professional Association of Trained Nurses of Nigeria. He proposes that, due to an acute shortage of doctors in Nigeria, nurses be trained and licensed to perform tasks normally left to doctors. These "midi" or "maxi" nurses will man rural health centres in the absence of a medical doctor, and will play an important role in the implementation of the Four Year National Development Plan, to provide new health facilities and improve old ones in Nigeria.
