Abstract
Progress in delivery of health care is impeded by prejudice against nonphysician medical personnel. Terms such as "subprofessional" should be supplanted by functional titles that describe the roles of each category of personnel. The term "primary health professional" would describe personnel who see a patient first, whereas "secondary health professional" would describe those who provide specialized treatment. The primary health professional should be a multipurpose worker. In contrast to popular opinion among health leaders, primary health professionals need to be decision-makers rather than subordinates; thus their training should provide experience in decision-making. Modern teaching methods must be applied to improve all aspects of training and strengthen teamwork for effective health care. Five references are listed.
