The American Health Education for African Development, Inc., (AHEAD)was founded in 1963. It is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization whose aim is to lead the campaign to banish major debilitating diseases from Africa. Its first major project is the establishment of a Nursing Education Centre in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa. The new nursing school will be a self-contained unit connected with a new teaching hospital group consisting of five Freetown hospitals. Duration of the course will be 3 1/2 years, including 6 months of introductory work. State registered nurses will be graduated there. Other AHEAD projects are planned. Since funds for health education in Africa are limited, the service offered by AHEAD does not duplicate other programme efforts. |
