Isi artikelIn 1979 the Papua New Guinea Branch of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) received the UNESCO prize for literacy after being nominated by the Department of Education of Papua New Guinea. What does SIL endeavour to accomplish in the field of literacy in the country? This paper outlines current programs which emphasize Papua New Guinean involvement and training. With over 700 different vernaculars, three national languages and several church languages, the task of eradicating illiteracy in the country is immense. The SIL believes good progress is being made towards this goal through the efforts of indigenous leaders and instructors in local villages throughout the country.
