Isi artikelI would like, to begin with, to express my appreciation for Kachru’s generous remarks, which perhaps could well be read before the paper itself. Further comment is probably superfluous, except to urge acceptance of his three closely-interrelated steps towards a &dquo;remedy&dquo; (salvation from the various &dquo;sins&dquo; and &dquo;heresies&dquo; to which the ESL profession is still heir?!). On the first, the reader might care to glance at Pride (1981), while considering how the second and third might be rather more intimately related in the design of TESL courses generally. The study of TESL should always have as one of its bases the study of multilingualism itself as a prime context for the use of English as an international language.
