This is a report of an exploratory study of the revision and selfcorrection capabilities of a group of university students for whom English is a second langauge (henceforth referred to as EL, students). The study was prompted by an experience familiar to language teachers - that of marking essays with mounting vexation at the stubborn recurrence of grammatical and other errors, many of which are violations of the very rules reviewed and reiterated only days ago.
