In this paper an attempt is made to show that although the problems currently facing the teaching and learning of English Language in the developing English speaking countries are numerous, the major threat comes from lack of professionalism in ESL teaching. Using the Nigerian situation by way of illustration, it is argued that the ineffectiveness of ESL teaching and learning activities results primarily from chronic teacher related factors such as: shortage of well trained teachers, use of unqualified teachers in the language classroom, and lack of inservice training opportunity. If ESL teaching in the developing English speaking countries is to be given a kiss of life, and ESL learning is to become fruitful, therefore, adequate attention should be given to these factors by recognising ESL teaching as a profession which can be practised only by the well trained, and by making available facilities and opportunities for proper training and retraining of teachers.
