Manuals for teaching foreign languages to native English speakers are extremely variable in the level of advice they give on pronounciation. Some of this is reliable, but some shows a complete lack of understanding of basic phonetic description. Nevertheless, the language of these manuals provides an interesting folk-linguistic resources, showing how nonphoneticians describe phonetic categories.
