In a microarray experiment thousands of genes are tested simultaneously. On a Affymetrix-type microarray each gene is represented by a probe set consisting of 11-16 probe pairs. Probe pairs are placed on the arrays in a random but known manner, one array having up to 250; 000 probe pairs. The result of a microarray experiment is a 4096 4096-pixel 16-bit greyscale image. If the image contain contaminated areas lots of information will be wasted, it is thus important to locate and remove artefact areas such as those. In this thesis a method is developed to detect artefacts automaticly. The method is evaluated with both synthetic and real artefacts and results have proven in many cases to be superior to results from a previous method. |
