Indonesian education world has low understanding of natural science, particularly those of basic physics. Improvements and research has been conducted, yet the problem remains. This research focuses on improving basic physics understanding by indetifing whether primary school students and teachers misconceive (or have alternative conception of) basic physics. The research was conducted at public primary schools in East Java (4), Yogyakarta (4), and in West Java (4). From each school 16 students (boys and girls) and 7 teachers (all natural science teachers in each school) are selected as samples. The students were given demonstration of six concepts concerning light (4 concepts), sound (1 concept) and magnet (1 concept), followed by questions from the researchers asking the students not only to simply answer the questions but also to give reasons or explanations for his/her answers. The teacher were give written test only, though the questions asked were the same with those asked to their students.
