The objective of this research was to determine the relevance between English speaking competencies of the high school graduates as specified in the Basic Course Outline (GBPP) on SMU Subject Matter of the English Language Study Program 1994 SMU Curriculum. This research was done using qualitative-naturalistic because it focuses on human behaviour, under naturalistic setting. Information was gathered through direct interaction with subject, ensuring that triangulation in data collection was employed to achieved data validity. Information was collected from high-school graduates and the 6th Semester of SMU students from IPA and IPS stream. Information was also collected from (a) managers of tourism industries that employed SMU graduates, (b) English teachers of SMU 6 Sanur Denpasar, (c) the Principal of SMU 6 Sanur Denpasar and (d) students parents. All data were recorded as fieldnotes and then subjected to a data reduction process, simplifying, abstracting, and transforming. Results of the study revealed that the 1994 SMU Curriculum for English Language Teaching was unable to develop the necessary English Language skills of the SMU students as needed by the tourism industries. Some essential language skills still needs to be improved therefore future curriculum design should address these shortcomings.
