Distance education is very much needed in developing countries such as Indonesia. There is a great number of able and adult students who cannot enjoy higher education because of the limited time and opportunity available to them. Distance education is the answer for them. However, society at large still look upon its graduates as less prestigious compared to those who graduate from the conventional universities. Distance education is perceived as an outsider from the mainstream university education since the indicator used to measure the performance of its graduate is still a controversial issue. The conventional university used academic standards while the distance education unversity is measured by its usefulness to elevate the need of those able-adult students but cannot afford to enter conventional university. This issue has triggered controversy toward the quality of each group.
