Isi artikelThis article discusses self-directed learning readiness of face-to-face and open-and-distance-learning (ODL) students. Serving as face-to-face samples were third grade senior high school students and ODL’s samples were Universitas Terbuka (UT) students. Samples of face-to-face students (as UT prospective students) were students from two high schools in Bogor and one in Depok. Self-directed learning readiness was measured with the Indonesian Version of Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) translated by Darmayanti (1993).The results showed that prospective students had significantly lower readiness for self-directed learning than UT students. SDLRS scores indicated that both prospective and UT students had average readiness for self-directed learning. It meant that students were likely to be successful in independent learning situations. However they were not completely comfortable being responsible for the entire process of identifying their learning needs and planning, imnplementing, and evaluating their learning. Thus, UT has to provide student support for improving students skills in self-directed learning.
