The problem faced by distance education’s students in studying mathematics is twofold; i.e. learning in distant mode that required self-directed learning competency and learning a subject matter that has a very hierarchical structure in nature. This article was based on a research conducted to explore relationship between students' mastery in basic courses with students' performance in the future. A number of 86 mathematics students first registered in 1990 served an samples. It is showed that the mathematics student’s mastery in basic courses related to student’s performance in the next future, including status of students, number of courses taken, and grade point average. Based on this result, it is recommended that learning support for students of mathematics should be given for basic courses such as Elementary Calculus and Linear Algebra.
