Isi artikelAlthough predominant accounts of the word superiority effect (WSE) as produced by the ReicherWheeler task (Reicher, 1969; Wheeler, 1970) emphasize an orthographic code, evidence is mounting that a phonological code may have a role in the performance of other tasks. The present study tested the influence of a phonological code as a determinant of performance in the Reicher-Wheeler task. Pseudohomophones and matched controls were presented in a letter identification task using a two alternative, forced choice method. Subjects performed significantly worse when the test letters spelled a pseudohomophone and the incorrect alternative formed the sound alike word, for example, when WERD is followed by the choice alternatives E and 0 for the second position. This effect was greater when words were included in the experiment. Implications for current models of lexical access and word recognition are discussed. @ 1997 Academic Press
