This article tries to identify information and communication techologies that are available and can be utilized to support distance education in Indonesia. It starts by looking at the main characteristics of distance education so that areas where technologies can be eleborated become clearer. The separation of teachers and learners, and learners from their peer learners during the course of their studies have been regarded by many experts in distance education as the main characteristics of distance education. This separation has created the need for fast and reliable two-way communiation means so that student individual learning needs can be met by the distance teaching institutions. Strengths and weaknesses of information and communication technologies such as telephone, radio, television, and internet in supporting distance education are discussed. This article finally suggests that the internet needs to be utilized and in what ways to support distance eduaction.
