Isi artikelThis article is a brief summary of research started from critical questions on the management of open Madrasah Tsanawiyah at pondok pesantren. The questions are focused on the management of self-learning process of relatively young pupils of the open Madrasah Tsanawiyah. The questions are: Is it possible for them to be self-study learners? How can they manage their time between being a self-study learner and being santri? How is their attitude towards their school as an institution and not as pondok pesantren? The research conducted in Pondok Kempek, Cirebon, West Java in 1997-1998, with qualitative method. The use of this method is to get deeper understanding of the pupils' point of view as the subjects. One of the findings is the pupils are used to the idea of self-study and they have unique self learning strategy of pondok pesantren.
