This paper discusses the development of distance education supporting applications through the Internet, especially those through the web (www). The web-based distance education application should be interactive since it is developed for the purpose of helping students gain a better understanding of course materials as well as for helping teachers and students gain the same perception of the learning process. A solution has been developed that integrates the Internet Database technology and the Java technology. Several applications that have been developed to support this system are the Java-based chatting program, Whiteboard program, Newsticker program, Overhead Projector program, archival mailing list, student administration system, and the document management system. These applications can be found at http://TeknologiInformasi.ee.etb.ac.id and http://www.ee.itb.ac.id/dcourse/mainsite.html. The Java-based applications are developed using the Java RMI (Remote Invocation) technology, while both the student administration system and the document management system are developed using the database server technology and PHP script.
