Isi artikelMartin Atkinson’s (1987) paper raises a fundamental question about the kind of relationship which should exist between psycholinguistic research into child language, and linguistic and philosophical views on the nature of language acquisition. To an outsider, the fact that this relationship should be a matter for debate may appear puzzling, since researchers in all three disciplines share a common interest in the nature of child language. However, it is by no means universally agreed that philosophy and theoretical linguistics can provide a framework for thinking about the nature of developmental change in child language, as Atkinson proposes.
