The National Awakening referring to the initial stage of the development of nationalism in Indonesia is a complex process by which the intellectuals got an awareness of the low status of the natives undergoing race-discrimination and negation. They collectively reacted vis-a- vis this stigma by founding an association which could serve as a symbol of their identity and channeling their national aspiration. Being in the first instance ethnic in nature the organizations developed into nationalist ones functioning as a political arena by which political communication was made possible. The realization of nationalism not only includes the formation of nation-state but also national culture and its concomitants, i.e. national consciousness, both being conductive to promote good citizenship.
