Isi artikel
Indonesia is well endowed with oil and natural gas resources, which occur in a number of onshore as well as offshore sedimentary basins which range from intensively explored to virtually unexplored. During the 100 years that oil has been produced in Indonesia, cumulative production amounted to around 10 billion barrels of oil. Possible reserves, economic with available technology, are estimated to be between 10 - 40 billion barrel. Taking into consideration the trend in energy consumption, it is estimated that early in the next century, Indonesia will turn from a net oil exporter into an oil importing country. Oil still represents the most important source of energy in Indonesia, although its share has dropped from around 87% in 1970 to around 64% in 1989. One of its refined products, kerosene, represents one of the most important source of energy in the household sector, besides firewood (and agricultural waste). The subsidized price of kerosene represents a Government effort to diminish the dependence on firewood, to prevent deforestation and to preserve the environment. Finally, the role of oil as an export earner and a source of Government revenues has long been acknowledged although these roles are diminishing as a result of the deregulation and export diversification policies of the Government.
